What to expect from your hardwood floors

July 23, 2011

When beginning the selection process of your hardwood floors there are many aspects and factors one must take into consideration.

Two factors that must be taken into consideration when choosing your wood specie are the amount of sunlight your floors will be exposed to and your expectation of how you’d like your flooring to look. Your exotic hardwood flooring is light sensitive and most species darken when exposed to large amounts of sunlight. Before purchasing your floor you need to be informed of possible color changes on the specie chosen.

Depending on the exotic species you can expect color variation in your floor boards. Meaning some boards will be darker or lighter than others due to the wood’s natural characteristic. Be an informed customer and request a large enough sample of the flooring of your choice from the supplier before installation so you can appreciate the variation and avoid surprises.

Another key element you should consider when choosing your hardwood floor is the moisture content in your home. When installed in different humidity environments you can expect your flooring to expand or contract and gaps to appear on the flooring due to high or low moisture. Make sure your wood is acclimated to your environment by requesting from the installer to moisture testing the floor and subfloor before installation and for your to maintain the right temperature and moisture in your home after your floor has been installed.

All in all in order to not be caught off guard with unexpected effects on your hardwood floor, you MUST be an informed and an involved buyer. Remember hardwood floors are manufactured to make your home beautiful and make you happy. So remember before buying your floor, you should know environmental factors in your home such as the amount of sunlight and moisture limits, get a large enough sample and learn about the characteristic of the specie and last but not least, buy from a reputable source, someone you can trust to make your dreams a reality.
