Hardwood Flooring 101: Color Choice

After making the decision to install hardwood flooring in their home, many homeowners will then ask about choosing the right color. Today, wood flooring is available in the lightest shades of whites and natural neutrals to the deepest ebony and mahogany hues. Here are some simple yet powerful tips to keep in mind when helping a client decide on a wood floor color that best suits their home.

Light Wood Flooring

As the light palette complements most décor styles, light wood flooring offers a blank canvas from which to build off of to create a variety of looks, as in the charming rustic bedroom below.  European White Oak Rossell

Or create a more modern appeal on trend like the sleek space below.  Seville Rustic White Oak

Light flooring will help give the illusion of space and make a smaller-sized room feel larger and much more open. Because they can create a sense of spaciousness, lighter shades of greys and neutrals also work well in rooms with low-ceilings.   Malaga European Rustic White Oak

Very light flooring pairs well with darker details as in the kitchen above. For families with children, light hardwood floors tend to show less dirt than dark hardwood floors.

Dark Wood Flooring

Dark wood floors are on trend and work well with a variety of design styles, whether modern furniture and fabrics or a mix of earth tones with antique-aged wood furniture.  Smoked Brushed Oak

Here you see how the dark floors complement the vibrant-colored furniture. They can be used to create for a formal dining room, bring out the warmth in other elements of décor for a more rustic cozy feel in a den as in the one below, or add a touch of chic modernity to an office space.

Whereas light colors make a room look airy, dark wood floors can make a room look smaller. If you do use a dark wood floor, wide plank hardwood flooring can make a room look bigger; the wider board will create fewer seams, which will balance out the dark color of the floor.
